ORC Week 1: Entryway Revamp

via
Welcome to week one of the Fall 2014 version of the One Room Challenge, hosted by Linda of Calling it Home! For this incarnation of the challenge, I've decided to revamp our entryway. My styleboard gives a feel for what I want to create.

My actual plan includes three small, related spaces:

Our front door and the area immediately surrounding it, in particular this shrub which has taken over half the doorway.

I have had no idea since we moved in what this bush was, and have been just waiting to see it do something. These photos show a little bit of red on the leaves so maybe it's a burning bush??

The foyer, where we all come & go as well as greet guests.

And an itsy-bitsy powder room. It's all-white and rather sterile.

Our house was built in the late 1950s so the vibe will be mid-century modern glam.

Some things I already love about the space...

Actually I don't know if the door will stay orange. But it is a fun color choice!

This light fixture is original to our house and I love its retro-ness. In an ideal world, though, the beech bi-fold closet doors would be replaced.

I'm super glad to have the double-hooks here on the wall for hoodies and vests. We also have some great storage in the nearby closet, however, this area could be better organized.

The punchlist for this project includes some things I've never done before like stenciling and sewing. And, as always, the budget for this project is just about zero... What might happen over the next six weeks is anyone's guess!

Now head over to Linda's to check out the rest of the participants! Then please come back next week to see what I've gotten done. You can sign up to receive blog posts by email on the right or follow on Facebook here.

  10. Keep the door orange!! I love it! I love your inspiration ideas. And that bush is so funny!! In my old house I had some rosebushes that were too wild....and they would ruin all my shirts when I went buy....

  14. What a lovely entryway space this is going to be. I cannot wait to see your progress and how it all unfolds.

I too am participating in the One Room Challenge. My challenges? I just moved to a completely new state (Texas) last week and therefore have no idea where to source things other than Wal Mart and Home Depot. :) I am currently battling strep throat and just want to lay around and eat soup as opposed to painting a 30 year old polyurethaned oak coffered ceiling that has never before seen paint. The accompanying powder room rivals the worst gas station stall ever. But a bonus is that the previous owners installed a wine glass and bottle holder on the ceiling of the bathroom. I kid you not. Come take a peek.

  16. Glad to see you're back at it girl! A challenge indeed! I hear ya, we moved into a home 20 month ago with the entire yard full of ivy. Fast forward to now the ivy and 26 trees are gone, grass in the backyard and planting grass in the front now. We have a few over grown bushes that look like trees that need to be cut down in the front. Once you do this you're entire landscape will change and you'll actually be able to see your house!! Can't wait to see what you'll do, good luck!
