Desperately Seeking...

The Buddhists have a saying "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." If only that were so with furniture!

Currently I am searching for a white, glossy cabinet. I want it to be about as wide as it is high and deep enough for some storage inside. I have the perfect image in mind of how I want it to look, which is turning out to be the problem!

Here are a few that are almost sorta what I want.

This one is from One Kings Lane, and not actually even still available, which is fine because it was so much more than what I was going to spend. I'm also not super keen on the mirrored panels. The purpose of getting a cabinet is to store the kids' arts & craft supplies, thus cutting down on the visual clutter in our open space, not a real solution if I'm constantly cleaning up little fingerprints.

This one is from Wayfair, and is wayyy more affordable. While I had been hoping for brass ring pulls for the hardware, the crystal knobs on this cabinet coordinate with what we have on the cabinets in our kitchen. It's shallow though, at only 13" deep, and a bit more country-kitten than I was envisioning.

The nightstand in this sweet room designed by Laura Wilmerding is the closest to what I want, and it's not even a cabinet. I suppose drawers could work...

For now, the plan is to build our own cabinet in order to get exactly what I am envisioning. But that could take ... months! Which does not gel with my timeline.

Ultimately it will replace this table in the corner of our dining room. When I put it there, I liked the way we were creating more space for additional dishes during meals.

But that's really not how we live. When we're not eating at the table, the kids are creating on it.

The console table will get a good new home. It will move to the area behind the sofa where I've carved out a little home office. The table currently there will go down to our basement-someday-playroom. And peace will reign on earth, or at least in my dining room!

  1. Carrie, If you can paint, then I say Craigslist would produce a lovely piece that you could doll up a bit. The brass rings are easy to find online. Good luck, it is so frustrating when you already know what you want.
