I would start with the table and some rugs. One rug to go underneath the table and the runner to accompany it. You could place the runner in front of the buffet or in the space that leads to the dining room. But adding the runner in the dining space adds another layer of softness and comfort.
Then I'd add the linens to the top of the table.
I chose a rustic-looking table runner with red stripes to be topped with red damask ikat placemats. The seersucker cocktail napkins and vintage floral dinner napkins round it out. Personally I think it's a nice mix of high & low, feminine & masculine.
Finally I would add the dishes.
White baroque dinner plates (there are also bowls, salad plates, and serving pieces in the sale), flatware with clean lines, and stemless wine glasses fit the scheme perfectly but would also work great for everyday dining.
What am I missing? Oh yes, seating. But weirdly enough, there are no chairs in the sale, just stools and benches. Since I haven't been watching HGTV Design Star I don't know how the contestants handled that one. I would probably use something uber-cheap since I just blew the budget on the table. In fact, we have a set of blue plastic school chairs in our basement that I think would be just the right mix of fun & casual.
***Happy 4th of July to all you patriots wherever you may be!***
